But all the things you try to hide will be revealed on the other side... [Jul. 15th, 2009|08:41 pm]
[Current Location |Home]
[ Mood | blank]
[ Music |Miles Davis - Just Squeeze Me]

I'm currently listening to Miles Davis, enjoying some scotch, and a cigar. I got a smoking jacket over the weekend. It's the same one I had eyed years ago at the antique mall. I saw another one there that I think I'm going to get this weekend when they have their sale.

My desk calendar it still on July 3rd. This mean's I'm way behind on everything. I'm finally done with the condo remodel...it turned out great. I'll have to post pictures.

I'm quite behind on comments and for that I apologize. It's been a stressful couple of months...

I'm hoping for a vacation at the end of July. If I don't end up going I might possibly kill someone...

RIP BERT 2001(?)-2009 [Jun. 30th, 2009|02:37 pm]
[ Music |Celtic Women - Danny Boy]

My beloved rabbit Bert passed away last night. He was a good bunny. I'm going to miss him. I'm pretty sure he was at least 8 years old. I could never confirm it though so he might have been a bit older or younger.

This picture is from 2005 but I really don't have many pictures of him...he never liked camera flash...

RIP BERTAMUS MAXIMUS

Hell Week... [Jun. 20th, 2009|10:14 am]
I"m sorry for not commenting lately...I will get back to commenting ASAP.

I have been busy fixing up my condo...it's been a nightmare of a project...and I went over the time limit I set for myself. I'm not quite done yet but I should be by Sunday night...here's to hoping.

I need to paint the ceiling and then patch the walls and paint in the front bathroom or powder room as the floor plan says. I have raceway to install too...I'm looking forward to that though =).

Today I have to do logging work on the property I manage. I'm looking forward to getting my saw back into my hands. I'm not looking forward to shelling out $350 for a 20 yard dumpster but I might have to...we'll see. I'm sure the ground is soaked because of all the storms we've had the past few days...that's going to be fun drudging through.

D-Day June 6th 1944 - 65th Anniversary [Jun. 6th, 2009|09:51 am]
[ Mood | aggravated]
[ Music |Band of Brother's Theme]

It was June 6, 1944 that the Normandy Landings took place that formed the spearhead of the Allied invasion of Nazi held Europe. D-Day was the tip of the spear of what ultimately led to the victory over the Nazi's.

So here we are 65 years later and Google has decided to honor the important occasion by putting an image on its homepage depicting...Tetris. Yes that's right Tetris. What's more important, 25 years of Tetris or 65 years of freedom? If even one person says Tetris I will no longer call you my friend and I will wash my hands of you for good, even if you are joking. I am not kidding around either. Apparently yes, it's far more important to Google to celebrate the anniversary of the invention Tetris than to memorialize D-Day. It just warms the heart, doesn't it?

This really isn't anything new when it comes to Google. Google always seems to find no reason to display images celebrating most American holidays. They have done images for Veterans Day in 2007 and 2008, and Independence Day since the beginning but don't for Memorial Day. If you don't believe me check there archive: http://www.google.com/holidaylogos.html.

Microsoft got it right today, yes Microsoft. There new search engine Bing.com has multiple links about D-Day and a nice full screen picture of the beaches. When Google gets it wrong and Microsoft gets it right...something must be wrong.

The History Channel is running a MASH marathon this morning. The writers and actors on that show would have gone AWOL long before the first landing craft left the dock on D-Day. What ever happened to the "History" part of the History Channel, anyway?

Why are there no airings of "The Longest Day", "Saving Private Ryan", or "Band of Brothers"? Networks run SPR other times during the year but why not today when it fits?

I have officially had it with Obama because I watched our President and his wife laughing and joking while they are at Point de Hoc. This is a memorial for the men who bravely fought and died to defend freedom. THIS IS NO LAUGHING MATTER!!!!!

Their lack of respect is on a level I can't ever begin to describe. Just yards from where Michelle and Barrack are smiling and patting people on the back is where men died giving their all.

Maybe they should take a long walk through the cemetery near there, and see if they are smiling then. My grandfather fought in France back in WWI. My dad had many friends who never made it off the beaches. This isn't a place to laugh and smile, it's a place to cry and mourn and reflect on what those brave souls did. They laid their lives upon the alter of freedom and didn't think twice about it.

I personally would like to extend my deepest and most heart felt thanks, and un-payable debt to our military, especially all the Devil Dog's out there, past, present and future.

Daddy [Jun. 5th, 2009|09:30 pm]
I wrote this entry a while back and I felt like updating it a bit and adding pictures of his medals and various other information.

DAD
Corporal Marvin Bloch
United States Marine Corps
1944-1946
World War II - Asiatic-Pacific Theater
Semper Fidelis

My father, Marvin Bloch, enlisted in the United States Marine Corps Reserve on March 27 1944. He was transferred from Chicago to ATS(Army Transport Service)- 131 at the MCAD (Marine Corps Aviation Depot) at Miramar Marine Corps Air Station in San Diego, California on June 17th 1944. He was then transferred to MWSS(Marine Wing Support Squadron)- 4 at Miramar Marine Corps Air Station in San Diego, California on July 15th 1944. In December 1944 he was promoted to the rank of Private First Class from Private. He transferred again to MACS(Marine Air Control Squadron)- 2 at Miramar Marine Corps Air Station in San Diego, California on February 26 1945.

On March 27th 1945 he went overseas with the 4th MAW(Marine Aircraft Wing) of the Fleet Marine Force to VMJ(Marine Utility Squadron)- 952 of MAG(Marine Air Group)- 21 then VMR(Marine Transport Squadron)- 952 of MAG-21. While with VMR-952 of MAG-21 he was part of the Okinawa Campaign where he flew in R5C-1 Curtiss Commando transport aircraft and air-dropped mortar shells, machine gun parts, ammunition, supplies, and blood within Marine lines, as well as helping air evacuate sick and wounded men.

While my father was on base in the Marianas Islands during the Okinawa Campaign between April 1945 and June 1945 he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal. The medal is awarded to any person who, while serving in any capacity in or with the military of the United States, distinguished himself or herself by heroic or meritorious achievement or service, not involving participation in aerial flight, while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed opposing foreign force. He was awarded the medal for shooting a Japanese soldier who he found on base. He quite possibly saved the lives of hundreds of Marines.

He received a commendation from the Commanding General of the 10th Army for his excellent service with the TAG(Transport Air Group) during the Okinawa Campaign.

On September 21st 1945 he was officially designated as an Enlisted Aviation Navigator and authorized to wear the Naval Aviation Observer (Navigator) insignia, and he was also promoted to the rank of Corporal from Private First Class. He would finish out the rest of his military service with the following squadrons:

VMR-952 of MAG-31
Hq Sq(Headquarters Squadron), 2nd MAW
Marine Hq Sq-14
SS-15, MAG-15 Air Fleet Marine Force, Pacific
VMR-352, MAG-15
VMR-253, MAG-15
Hq Sq Air Fleet Marine Force, Pacific

After returning to the United States he was honorably discharged at the United States Marine Corps Great Lakes Separation Center on July 19th 1946.

Badges, Ribbons, Medals:

Naval Aviation Observer (Navigator) Badge

Ribbon Bar

Medals

The Asiatic-Pacific Campaign medal has the following devices attached:
One Bronze Star for participation in the Okinawa Campaign

He passed away 4 years ago today.

When I get a chance I'm going to put a picture of his headstone here.

I've been doing a lot of research trying to find people he served with and it's been a real let down. Most of the men from his navigation class and from his squadrons have passed away. I do have a few promising leads and I plan on making some phone calls soon to see if there the right people. I really would love to meet someone who served with him.

DRINK! Part 7 - The Lucky Seven [Jun. 4th, 2009|06:31 pm]
[ Mood | nervous]
[ Music |From First To Last - Populace In Two]

Lucky Seven

1/2 oz Southern Comfort
1 oz Vodka - Preferably Absolute or Skyy
1/2 oz Amaretto
1/2 oz Triple Sec
1/2 oz Jack Daniels
1/2 oz Sloe Gin
1 splash Lime Juice
1 splash Cranberry Juice
1 splash Orange Juice

Combine the seven liquors in a Collins glass, straight. Top it with splashes of cranberry, lime, and orange juices.

Stick with the listed ingredients and booze. If you don't your not going to be happy because usually drinks with this many ingredients taste like crap, but these go surprisingly well with each other.

This drink has also been called The Unholy Seven at some bars.

Cheers!
